What it does

Server & cPanel Safe Admin: Free Grok Bot to Manage a VPS or cPanel Server Without Handing Over Root is a free Grok bot template. Free Grok Bot that runs your VPS or cPanel server safely: limited SSH user, read-only checks first, backups before changes, and your approval.

Once you add it to Grok Bot, it runs as your own AI agent: it asks a few setup questions, connects the services it needs, and then works through its routines on a schedule, logging every action in an activity tracker so you can always see what it did and what is waiting on you.

Who it's for

Small business owners, freelancers, web designers and hobbyists who run a VPS, a cPanel/WHM reseller or dedicated server, or a homelab and want help keeping it healthy without handing an AI full root access.

No coding is required. If you can chat with Grok, you can run this bot: describe your goals in plain English, review what it drafts, and adjust the instructions any time.

Features

  • Sets up least-privilege access: a dedicated key and limited user or scoped cPanel/WHM API token, never root.
  • Runs read-only health checks: disk, updates, SSL, backups, mail queue, logs and logins.
  • Writes change plans with exact commands, a backup first and a rollback step.
  • Investigates outages read-only first and proposes the smallest fix.
  • Flags signs of compromise and drafts isolation steps.
  • Logs every action to an activity-tracker CSV.
  • HOW TO USE: First message: when you open the bot it greets you with: "Hi!
  • I help you run your server safely: limited access instead of root, read-only health checks, and change plans you approve with a backup and rollback first.
  • What do you run (VPS, cPanel/WHM, Plesk or a homelab), and what do you want help with first?" Ask: "I'm about to give you the root SSH key to my cPanel server.
  • How do I do this safely?".
  • You get: Please don't use root.
  • Checklist: 1) new ed25519 key just for the bot, 2) user 'botadmin' with sudo limited to 9 read/status commands, 3) key restricted to one IP, 4) root login + passwords stay off, 5) take a snapshot first.
  • For cPanel tasks, a WHM API token with only the 3 ACLs you need, expiring in 90 days.
  • Ask: "Run a health check".
  • You get: Yellow: disk 84% (backups folder 31 GB, oldest 120 days), 14 security updates pending, AutoSSL fails on 1 domain (DNS points elsewhere).
  • Green: load, memory, services, backups ran last night.
  • Change plan drafted for the updates with snapshot + rollback; nothing run yet.
  • Ask: "My WordPress site is down".
  • You get: Read-only findings: PHP-FPM pool for that account hit max_children at 09:12, error log shows a plugin loop.
  • Proposed fix: disable that plugin by renaming its folder (rollback: rename back) and raise max_children from 5 to 10.
  • Approve?
  • Ask: "Who has logged in this week?".
  • You get: SSH: botadmin from the expected IP (32 sessions); 1 successful login as 'deploy' from a new country on Tue 02:14.
  • That's unusual: plan drafted to review that key, check new cron jobs and change the account password.

FAQ

Should I give my bot root access?

No. Give it its own key and a limited user with sudo only for specific commands, or a scoped, expiring cPanel/WHM API token. If the key ever leaks, you delete one user or token instead of rebuilding the server.

Does it work with cPanel, Plesk and plain VPS servers?

Yes. It works with cPanel/WHM, Plesk, and Linux VPS or homelab servers (Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky). On control panels it prefers the panel's API and tools over raw root commands.

Will it run commands on its own?

Only read-only checks you've approved. Anything that writes, restarts, installs or deletes needs a change plan you approve first, with a backup and rollback step.

What if my server gets hacked?

It looks for warning signs (unknown users, new cron jobs, outbound spam, odd logins) and, if it finds them, stops and helps you isolate the server and contact your host. It's not a replacement for a security professional on a serious breach.

Will it act without asking me?

No. It drafts and proposes; nothing is sent, posted, filed, bought, booked, cancelled or deleted until you approve it.

Is my data shared anywhere?

No. Files stay in the bot's own workspace, you sign in to your own accounts, and it never stores passwords.
