How to Connect Grok Bot to Your X DMs (Free Template)
Last updated: . Independent, not affiliated with xAI.
If your X inbox is a mix of real opportunities, community questions, spam and fake "X Support" accounts, connecting Grok Bot to your DMs is one of the most useful things you can set up. On Oct 16, 2026, Elon Musk posted on X that asking Grok Bot to connect to your X DMs is the "best way to use it." (He wasn't talking about this site or this template.) This guide shows you how to do it with the free X DM Inbox Assistant template, in plain English and with no coding.
What the X DM Inbox Assistant does
The X DM Inbox Assistant is a free Grok Bot template for creators, founders and anyone whose DMs and message requests have gotten out of control. Once it's set up, it:
- Sorts your DMs and message requests into opportunities, community, spam and likely scams.
- Sends a daily DM brief with context on who's messaging you.
- Drafts replies in your voice and waits for you to approve them.
- Flags likely scams and never clicks links inside DMs.
- Tracks promising contacts and reminds you to follow up when a thread goes quiet.
- Logs every action to an activity-tracker CSV, so you can always see what it did and what's waiting on you.
Before you start
You need two things:
- The Grok Bot app. Download it from xAI (x.ai/bot) and sign in.
- Your X account. You'll either connect it to the bot with DM access or sign in to X in the bot's own browser. Never paste your X password into the chat.
How to connect Grok Bot to your X DMs: step by step
1. Open the template
Go to the X DM Inbox Assistant page on Grokbot Agents.
2. Add it to Grok Bot
One-click Add to Grok Bot is coming soon. Until then, click Download to save the template JSON.
Manual install: in Grok Bot, create a new bot, open the downloaded JSON, copy the instructions, and paste them into the first message with "Set yourself up with these instructions."
3. Say "Let's get started."
The bot asks a few setup questions, one at a time.
4. Connect your X account
Choose how it reads your DMs: connect your X account with DM access, or sign in to X in the bot's browser. Grok Bot asks before connecting each service, and you can disconnect it later. Exact screens and button labels in Grok Bot's X-connect flow are coming soon — we haven't confirmed them hands-on yet. Never paste your password into the chat.
5. Tell it who matters
Give it your VIP list and what counts as an opportunity for you (sponsorships, clients, press, collabs).
6. Set your voice and common answers
Share how you usually reply, plus things like your rate card or booking link, so drafts sound like you.
7. Pick a brief schedule
Tell it how often you want your DM brief, for example once a day at 6 PM.
8. Check the tracker
The bot creates its activity tracker at
/workspace/trackers/x-dm-inbox-assistant.csvand starts its routine. You can see scheduled tasks in the Routines tab.9. Try your first prompts
Try your first prompts: "Give me my DM brief," "Is this brand deal legit?" and "Who haven't I followed up with?"
Here is the kind of brief the template is built to produce (an illustrative example from the bot's listing, not real data): "143 new: 4 real opportunities (a podcast invite, 2 brand deals, 1 client lead) with drafted replies, 9 community questions, 112 spam and 18 likely scams."
Safety first: set it up so you stay in control
An assistant with access to your DMs should work for you, not speak for you. The template follows these rules by default, and you should keep them:
- Approve before anything is sent. The bot drafts replies; nothing goes out until you OK it. If you want to speed up a repeat reply, write a specific standing rule for that one template instead of turning on blanket auto-send.
- Never auto-delete. Don't let it delete, block or report conversations on its own. The template won't delete, block or report anything without your approval. Review its "spam" pile before you clear it, because real opportunities sometimes land in message requests.
- Never click DM links. The bot doesn't click links in DMs, and it flags red flags like new accounts, off-platform links and upfront "fees."
- No mass DMs. It follows X's rules: no bulk or unsolicited automated messages.
- Protect your login. Sign in to your own account; never share passwords in chat. Use read-only access where you can.
- Read the template first. There are no hidden instructions. Download the JSON and read every line before you add it.
A good opening instruction: "Never send anything without my approval. Give me a 6 PM summary of who needs a reply."
Tips to get more out of it
- Keep your VIP list short (10 to 20 people) so the brief stays focused.
- Save 3 or 4 reply templates ("send details by email," "not a fit right now," "here's my rate card").
- Ask "Who haven't I followed up with?" once a week to catch deals that went quiet.
- Pair it with the X/Twitter Growth Operator: that one helps you post and grow, and this one handles the conversations that come from it.
